Synopsis

The political transformation in Poland and the civilization and cultural processes taking place in the world at the turn of the century, have significantly changed the demographic and social structure of our country. In 1989–2003, about 3 million people temporarily or permanently emigrated from Poland. Another 2–3 million after joining the European Union. Numerous analyses and forecasts of the effects of this alarming phenomenon are mainly focused on emigrants and their families, especially children. Let us remember, however, that emigrants leave not only their spouses and children in the country, but also their parents and grandparents. When they are fit, they work and help their children to raise their grandchildren, but when they are no longer needed and their health deteriorates, they may be left without the support of their loved ones. Officially, the percentage of old people in Poland is not yet high. However, it is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. Therefore, it may turn out that in many areas of our country we will have whole villages and towns of pensioners. Other dimensions of old age are also important – economic, social, family and psychological. Inclusion activities should be focused on three areas of senior citizens' lives: family, social and professional. Without underestimating the others, the article focuses on the need to prolong the professional activity of seniors.
