The private provenance archives are defined in the archive related legislation as unrecorded non-state archival holdings. The legislation does not regulate in detail how to manage these holdings. Similarly, their status is unclear in the archival theory and methodology. There are ongoing discussions about their nature, as either fonds or collections. As a result, any practical decisions relating to these holdings are often subjective or made on a case-by-case basis. The author discusses this issue when examining a few of the basic archiving functions, such as record appraisal, acquisition, recordkeeping, arrangement and communication. This is further supported by examples of various ways how and where these holdings are recorded and kept. The author provides information about benefits of the archival information systems, including supporting information sharing as well as providing other numerous and unique advantages.
