A typical genealogical query – an unusual ending
Synopsis
The article presents an extraordinary story of a genealogical inquiry that evolved from a routine archival request into the discovery of previously unknown family ties linking Poland and France. This discovery initiated months of contact with the French descendants of Józefa Kopeć, an emigrant whose fate had remained unknown to the Polish branch of the family for decades. Subsequent meetings, exchanges of documents, and shared journeys to places connected with their ancestors led to the symbolic reunification of the family. The text highlights the emotional dimension of an archivist’s work and emphasizes that archival records possess a remarkable power to connect people and restore memory.
