Synopsis

The chapter addresses the affective dimension of archives, contributing to the growing field of research on affective archival studies and cultural memory. It also serves as the editors’ introduction to the collective monograph entitled Emotions in Archives: Memory, Power, Identity. The authors proceed from the assumption that the archive constitutes a dynamic space of social experience and reconstruct the theoretical foundations of affective archival studies as a research perspective that recognizes emotions as an integral component of archival practice and the process of knowledge production. The text also presents findings from studies on the functioning of archives in local and social contexts, highlighting the emotional relationships between the archive, the archivist, and the user. Furthermore, it outlines the structure of the volume as a proposal for a multi-level reflection on the role of archives in shaping memory, identity, and social responsibility within contemporary humanities.
