Synopsis

The research is a combination of a theoretical and empirical study. The for-mer part includes an attempt to analyze source literature concerning the space of school, its social dimension and the context of multiculturalism. A parallel is drawn between the notion of the school’s space and conceptual categories related to urban planning and architecture. The school’s space comprises interactions between its subjects, here represented mainly by the students of Polish nationality, and students who belong to three ethnic groups of author’s choice (Chechen, Vietnamese, and Roma children). The study looks into issues associated with language as a tool of socialization and refers to one of the sociolinguistic theories by B. Bernstein. Moreo-ver, it presents psycholinguistic aspects in the process of acculturation of culturally foreign children in the Polish school and the contexts of socialization processes. In addition, a socio-pedagogical analysis of the categories of child and childhood, equal opportunities issue and the question of cultural status is performed. The child’s view of the world in the theoretical deliberations of the presented work is a not only a specific phenomenon but also an attribute of developmental processes. It is also marked by adult interpretations. One of the theoretical chapters is devoted to a culturally “different” child within the school’s space. Attention is drawn to the legal and organizational aspects of school education in Poland in the context of mul-ticulturalism of its students. The focus is on the social change, educational inclusion, school reality and practical solutions.
