Synopsis

The text presented here characterises the collection of Witold Gryl, located among four other collections in the Juliusz Słowacki Municipal Public Library in Tarnów. Gryl was a non-obvious dossier maker for several reasons. His rigorous training in chemistry and his professional work from graduation to retirement was a necessity, while his extra-professional passions, including his interest in local history, bibliophilism and holding many social functions and roles in local organisations and institutions, thanks to his attitude meticulousness and patience as an amateur historian and archaeologist resulted in many tangible, useful actions, as well as publications and archives and elaborations, often on unknown topics in the history of the city of Tarnów and the region, abounding in many important but unknown details. His collection, which he had been consistently increasing on a regular basis for decades, was partly handed over by his daughter to the Tarnów bookshop, in accordance with his will. The holdings of Gryl’s collection are used by editors, students, graduate students, as well as scholars and amateur researchers of the history of Tarnów. A significant part of the collection in the form of typescripts and manuscripts is in free access, made available electronically in the form of scans in the Tarnów Digital Library. The problem is the comprehensive processing of part of the collection (apart from the books and periodicals already processed). It is to be hoped that the remaining part of the collection, crucial for local history researchers, will be professionally archived and made available to the public in a catalogued form.
